AirPods are controlled by the new Apple H1 chip and recognize through optical sensors and acceleration sensors whether they are in the ear. The H1 chip automatically routes the audio signals and activates the microphone, regardless of whether you use both AirPods or just one. And when you're on the phone or talking to Siri, an additional accelerometer with speech recognition and wave-focused microphones ensure less external noise and a clearer voice.
